NLPA President's Message-Alfonso Mercado

Dear NLPA familia,

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! As President of the National Latinx Psychological Association (NLPA), I am honored to address
you at a pivotal time in our collective journey. We stand united in our commitment to advance
equity, representation, and understanding within the field of psychology and our broader
communities.

In recent years, we have witnessed a heightened awareness of the challenges faced by ethnic
minority groups, and with that, a call to action. It is crucial that we harness this momentum to
foster not only recognition but also meaningful change. Together, we can create an inclusive
environment that values the rich tapestry of our diverse backgrounds, experiences, and
perspectives.

Unity is essential as we move forward. It is not merely a word; it is an active, ongoing
commitment to collaboration and solidarity with all communities. We must continually advocate
for policies and practices that promote psychological well-being, social justice, and equitable
access to mental health resources. In doing so, we are not only serving those within our
communities but enriching the entire field of psychology.

As we embark on this path, let us emphasize the importance of cultural humility in our work. We
must recognize that to truly understand one another, we need to listen with open hearts and
minds. By appreciating the unique experiences and histories of different ethnic groups, we can
build a stronger foundation for authentic dialogue and healing.

Moving forward means empowering the next generation of psychologists from marginalized
backgrounds. We must invest in mentorship and educational opportunities, ensuring that diverse
voices are present in our professional spaces. As leaders, it is our responsibility to create
pathways for these future scholars and practitioners, helping them to navigate and thrive in a
world that is often unwelcoming.

Let us work collectively to dismantle the barriers that perpetuate inequality and discrimination.
Together, we can employ our research, advocacy, and clinical practices to challenge stereotypes,
promote understanding, and create inclusive spaces in academia, healthcare, and beyond.

I urge each of you to embrace the strength of unity as we move forward. Let us
commit ourselves to the principles of empathy, collaboration, and dedicated service to our
communities. Together, we can shape a future where every individual feels seen, heard, and
valued. That is why my presidential theme will highlight the Psychology of Immigration through Science, Advocacy, Practice, and Community. I will be sharing my presidential initiatives in the near future and a new innovative NLPA summit for our Fall meeting at the U.S. Mexico Border, which our LC recently approved.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to this mission. Together, we will continue to break
barriers and promote psychological well-being for all.

Alfonso Mercado, Ph.D.

NLPA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Partnership

On September 26, 2023 – NLPA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched a new partnership to focus on improving the health and wellbeing of the Latinx community in the United States.

This strategic partnership enables NLPA and HHS to work together more closely to facilitate information exchange and outreach, education, and research training opportunities. Together, we hope to more effectively take action to help enhance and increase care of Latinxs.
